What type of doctor do you see for hair loss?

I am only 20 and seem to be loosing more hair than normal. Anyone know whay type of doctor I need to see or what could be causing this? What type of doctor do you see for hair loss?
Considering your age, -- and assuming you're not a cancer patient or something -- I would start with either an endocrinologist (to check the specifics of your hormone levels) or a dietician to examine your nutrition.

A dermatologist can tell you if you are harming your scalp with shampoos, soaps or other products.

As always, start with your GP and let him/her refer you.

Good luck!!What type of doctor do you see for hair loss?
Hi Shannon, for hair loss problems, you can see a dermatologist, skin specialist or trichologist (hair expert). For hair loss, the first suspect is often the thyroid. If the thyroid is ok, then it could be genetic or simply nutrient deficiency. You can check out info about hypothyroidism and vitamins for hair loss from this site:

Have a nice day. Your worries may turn out to be a small matter which can be corrected easily. By the way, do you know that losing 100 hairs a day is considered normal?
All of the above answers are correct. Lack of iron, poor diet, stress, low or high thyroid all can cause hair loss. Have you switched shampoos lately? My son used a shampoo called BedHead and it make his hair fall out-I'm not kidding!

Most people will lose between 50-100 hairs per day believe it or not. If you believe it's not for any of the reasons listed above, and you are losing 'plugs'; of hair or it's coming out in your fingers and never ceases, you need to make another appointment with the doctor and it's really up to the patient to be emphatic and say ';STOP...LISTEN...something is wrong!'; Some doctors just don't slow down and stop for 5 minutes unless you really call them on it. Good luck.
This could be a hormone problem, thyroid problem or iron deficiency. I would start with your family doctor.
